Research

Definition of Upcycling:

Reuse (discarded objects or material) in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original. Upcycling represents a variety of processes by which “old” products get to be modified and get a second life as they're turned into a “new” product with better quality.

Definition of Recycling:

The action or process of converting waste into reusable material. Recycling is the process of collecting and processing materials that would otherwise be thrown away as trash and turning them into new products.

What is the difference?

The difference between recycling and upcycling is that recycling involves the destruction of waste in order to create something new, whereas upcycling takes waste and creates something new from it in its current state. Upcycling is highly creative and can involve a wide variety of techniques and materials to create the finished product.

e.g. If we take a used glass bottle, melt it, and with the molten glass we make a lampshade, that’s recycling. If instead, we take the same bottle, clean it, and directly use it as the shade of our new lamp, that’s upcycling.

Upcycle Artists

  1. Tim Noble and Sue Webster

British artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster met in 1986, while studying fine art in Nottingham. The couple is known for their iconic “shadow sculptures,” made from recycled materials and rubbish. They then illuminate these in order to cast shadows on the walls and surrounding ground. At first sight, the piece may look like a pile of rubbish. However, once the light is cast, the shadow of the piece reveals an incredibly detailed and realistic image on the wall.

2. Thomas Damblo

This danish artist goes above and beyond in up cycling. Thomas turns trash into trolls. Thomas works with his team. They have specialized in making wooden sculptures from scrap wood, such as Hector Protector and Trolls The Troll but they also have a great experience with making sculptures from other materials such as plastic, and even cardboard.

3. Ute Decker

Ute Decker is a pioneer of the international ethical jewelry movement. she works predominantly in recycled silver and was one of the very first worldwide to create pieces in Fairtrade Gold.

ute decker is best known for her minimalist yet bold sculptural pieces.

she has created an innovative method of sculpting, bending, and twisting gold and silver into expressive three-dimensional “geometric poetry”.

Indonesia's Uniqueness

Indonesia is a country filled with many different cultures and traditions. In this project, I am keen on highlighting the beauty of kain and traditional accessories which are normally seen on traditional dancers. Kain tenun dates back to pre-historical eras. Countries which has influenced kain tenun are India, China, Europe to name a few. These influences were the roots of the phoenix illustration on a kain. People would also then illustrate temples, animals and humans.

As for traditional accessories, these are not something people wear daily. Indonesian traditional dances are derived from old folklores and tales. When created to become a dance, costume designers wound depict however that character was written into a stage costume.

Initially, in this project I wanted to create a a traditional Indonesian dancer accessory using waste materials.

However, it did not fulfill the criteria of using three unused products and making it the minimum size of 20x20cm

I then decided to create an organizer using these three unused product; bamboo bag, batik shirt/old school uniform, and make up brush holder.

Evaluation:

Creating a functional product from unused materials and recycle items (plastic), giving it a new purpose which incorporates the Indonesian culture to further enrich our country's essence.

The end product goal is to create a multi-function organizer using a bamboo bag as it's main basis. Integrating it with make up a brush holder, batik shirt and further experiments with various plastics.

MOCK UP AND EXPLORATION

WASTE MATERIAL EXPLORATION

material : guitar string, plastic bag, washy tape

method : wrapping and twisting

Shaping hard plastic by burning then combining into an Indonesian flower (Jasmine, Orchid, Rafflesia)

material : plastic bottle pieces

method : burning

Shaping hard plastic by cutting and burning into a flower

material : bottom of plastic bottle

method : cutting, burning

Making the stigma of the flower using chip bags with cutting and curling method

material : chip bag

method : cutting, curling, twisting

Exploration Evaluation

During the exploration process, I find burning a good manipulation for creating a unique shape especially for flower petals. It also helps bend the plastic in ways manual cutting won't create. However, I find issues in combining individual different pieces for my product since the plastic isn't hung, it's stuck on the basket itself. I had difficulties especially in exploring loose plastic materials and the unused materials. I find simplicity looks much more cohesive and creating the aesthetic through the waste materials and painting.

UNUSED MATERIAL EXPLORATION

Material: Batik Shirt

Method: Cutting and Sewing

Material: Bamboo Bag

Method: Painting and weaving using waste material

Material: Makeup brush holder

Method: glueing melted plastic as decoration and painting

FINAL PRODUCT

I honored Indonesia's beauty through the flower accents, inspired by the hibiscus flower often seen in tropical countries and batik shirt (an Indonesian traditional clothing). This product is a multipurpose organizer which can be hung or kept on a desk.

The organizer is strong enough to hold phones, power banks, scissors and many more

Final Evaluation

This project was something I was quite hesitant about for arts and crafts is not something I'm quite gifted in. I struggled finding a way to manipulate plastic in ways which makes it look like a cohesive decoration which is visually pleasing. However, after a rocky road I find myself proud of the end product I have created. This project pushed me to find new ways in manipulating plastic and old materials which I thought holds no purpose in my life anymore. Through feedback from my peers, they mentioned how my product looks professionally made and interesting since I used an old school uniform. She also mentioned how I "use an upcycle method to the max".

In future projects, I would definitely improve on my neatness in sewing and plastic manipulation. Also, I would improve in my work efficiency since creating a cohesive product took me nearly 10 weeks to figure out,
