Pesawaran Room Decor

Writer's picture: dinda abhista dinda abhista

This project was a collaborative work, we each had to create a room decor product which resonates with Pesawaran region and combine it as one cohesive display.

First step before anything, we did a collective research about the region and also about home decor products.

Mindmap

Personal and Team Analysis

During the ideation phase, I initially wanted to create a wooden table with carving or screen printing. However, we were then informed we need to implement the sulam jelujur fabric itself on our product. Which is why I changed it to table cloth.

DESIGN MATRIX

we individually looked for ideas that may suit our vision best in creating products and combine them into one moodboard.

then we sift our option into one final moodboard

Personal Product Development

I started our my process with sketching and researching about the sulam jelujur fabric. Educating myself on it's pattern and history. Also, how to ethically handle the fabric,

Product sketch and production

first I created a more detailed sketch of my product, then proceed on dividing the Sulam Jelujur fabric with each team mate. After dividing the fabric I went ahead and searched for an additional fabric to use as the base of my cloth which has a similar color and texture with Sulam Jelujur.

Production

base material: belacu fabric, technique: stitching and embroidery

Sulam Jelujur fabric is embroidered and cut out accordingly to it's outline. It is then combined with the belacu fabric with additional embroidery pattern personally sketched by me. During the stitching process, the border between the belacu fabric and sulam jelujur seems to look quite empty, which is why I added a line of green stitching to make the product more put together.

Final Product

Product name: Marina (meaning: of the sea. Marina is a female given name, the feminine of Latin Marinus, from marinus "of the sea", occurring in many European languages as well as Japanese.)

Story: The table cloth design is a combination of Pesawaran's batik pattern and their traditional fabric. The sulam jelujur pattern is cutout in a shape that is inspired by a fish's fin. The color scheme created is a reflection of Pesawaran's ocean site beauty.

Price: Rp427,000

Packaging Moodboard

aside from being a team leader, me and my team mate Maxel are assigned the role as the packaging designer.

Original Packaging Design

After receiving feedback, lecturers advice we add more color into our packaging to live up with our brand name "Pesawarana".

being in charge of the packaging, I experimented with the design of the sleeve and logo sleeve, to see which suits having color more. Maxel created the vector logo and pattern vector, I implemented both design in the packaging.

Branding

The Logo

We chose a typeface which has an ethnic touch to it as it represents the Indonesian culture. Furthermore, the shape outlining the texts is a simplified version of Menara Siger's roof (Lampung's Landmark)

meaning:

The name Pesawarna derived from the word 'Pesawaran' and 'Warna'. We chose this name to showcase the colors of Pesawaran's nature through our creativity as a designer in hopes to introduce Pesawaran's heritage towards more people. Especially highlighting their traditional fabric, sulam jelujur.

Display Process

During our display process, we encountered our first issue where the chairs we originally had did not suit our mood board we wanted. Then, we had another issue where we felt we were lacking more decoration to fill in the area of our display. Vio managed to find more decor and a wooden chair to better suit our display accordingly to our mood board. Lastly, we realized Maxel's rug did not stand out as much in the display due to there being a blue carpet beneath our products. I then brought a light colored fabric to be put underneath as a base of our display.

Final Display

products:

Rug - Maxel

Table cloth - Dinda

Vase - Flo

Wall Decor - Vio

Our display is created to resemble a living room nuance. Which is why we also chose the boho theme, we wanted something more relaxing which also resonates with Pesawaran's beautiful beaches and nature. The presentation of our artworks is booth of display in a creative showcase. Each time someone visits our display, I as the team leader explains the meaning of our products and display in representation of our team. Furthermore, answering any question given by judges and guests.

Personal Evaluation

This project has been the most exhausting yet rewarding experience I have had in my whole life. This was the first time I was collaborating with people on a design and also creating a display. I was very challenged mentally to manage my team whilst also working on my product and my role as a packaging designer. Without the support and help of my fellow team mates, it would have been much more difficult. Looking back now, I can definitely improve the quality of my personal product and alter the sizing to have a more high quality feel. I also believe I could have improved my presentation skills better, during the presentation with the Pesawaran people I was already in an exhausted state and so I didn't word myself as well as I could. But overall, I learned a lot about teamwork, solidarity, trust, communication, interior design/design, time management, and leadership. This experience will definitely benefit future projects wether I'm working with a real client or a team. It was a gratifying feeling seeing myself displayed on komiinfo pesawaran's instagram along with products my team have created.
