Video Concept
We are creating a video interview based on face-to-face meeting and conversation setting with candidates that we choose such as our siblings or friends that are having a suitable age to be incorporated in this topic and activity. By the end of the video we discuss the conclusion based on the respondents then present it. The video will be about 10 minutes long.
Conclusion That We Drew
From yes and no questions, we have found that most participants have the same percentage of affirmative than no. Most of the part, they use their social media platform to communicate with their friends and families. Mostly, they look up to their influencers that they follow according to their personal interest and activities.
Based on all of our interviews, social media does affect a lot of gen z’s self image. The people we follow will indirectly make us self conscious due to their curated and perfected image of their life. Many are aware of this issue; however it doesn’t take away that it may affect them negatively.
On a rare case, it can affect us positively. One of our interviewers said how the influencers she follows motivates her “ to be more productive and try nee things.” So by the end of the day, it comes to our own awareness. How we choose to perceive the things we see online. Thankfully, influencers have started sharing more “real” images of themselves online. Coming out clean with all the editing they do on their posts. So why is social media so addicting? Because its only one download away.
Social media is very accessible, even the top apps are free; They are constantly finding a way for people to be more interactive. As humans we love to share things, we long for affection and attention. Therefore social media is an easy way to get that.
The Design Aspect of Social Media
2 out of 5 participants feel that the influencers they follow not affect their self image through the way they show or design specific posts. These all connects to the creative designs that were made by designers such as filters and other photo editing features. Most of the participants think that social media increases narcissism and affects vanity in most people since most people on social media always try to portrait the best representation of themselves. And some people got affected by the like buttons/counts that are made by the social media designers, it affects the addictive trigger for people to crave and want more likes. In addition, the way designers arrange the comments and notifications layout make some people love compliments from people and want to present their self more to the audiences. Because psychologically speaking, people feel good about themselves from gaining compliments that produce a chemical dopamine in the brain that link to people reward system.
On the other hand, people could get critics and unpleasant words as well that can make them feel less about their self-image. So the way designers design the platform of social media always unexpectedly affect their audience in variety of ways. Developers also works hard on making new interactive features so that we don’t easily get bored; Engagement plays a big role in social media. Today social media gives you content that's like the ones you’ve engaged with. Therefore making you more addicted. Even the littlest things like the lay out affects the user’s experience. Instagram, facebook, snapchat and many more has visually altered their app a few times over the years. Changing their design is what keeps people glued to their app. The easier to navigate and visually pleasing the app, the more we can’t stray away.
