Final Project - Typeface & Book

Writer's picture: dinda abhista dinda abhista

Brief

Create a typeface that represents given theme and implement it into different medium from print to digital. The typeface

has to be legible, readable, communicate appropriate ideas and feelings and interesting to look at.

• Legible – judged by the ability of the viewer to recognised different characters or letters.

• Readable – the viewer’s ability to take in the meaning of sentences and paragraphs, by factors such as the

distinction between different letters, line length, margins and the spaces between letters and between lines.

• Appropriate – by factors such as the weight of letter, variety of width, height and curve in elements such as the

stem.

Theme:

Indonesia through your eyes

Concept:

Discrimination within the lgbtq+ community in Indonesia

My focus is not to force acceptance towards people, it is to encourage respect. In my eyes, Indonesia lacks knowledge towards the lGBT+ community. Our citizens often confuse the community as an impact influenced by the western culture or as a type of mental illness. I aim to educate and widen the audience's perspective of this matter.

Background:

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, a group facing worsening discrimination in Indonesia. Beginning in January 2016, a series of anti-LGBT public comments by government officials grew into a cascade of threats against LGBT Indonesians. On January 24, 2016 the Minister of Higher Education Muhammad Nasir said he wanted to ban LGBT student organizations from university campuses. This type of exclusion only grows by each passing year. The country have become more open minded and embraced this "newer" concept. However, people with conservative values and/or of the older generation still aren't as accepting towards them.

I want focus more towards being encouraging Indonesian citizens whom are against the community to respect these people.

Influential roles in the community:

- Drag Queens (show business in general)

- Fashion

-Vivian Rubiyanti Iskandar (first trans Indonesian to be legally recognized as a woman)

- Bunda Pandan (Indonesian transgender and performer)

- Riska Carolina (Human Rights researcher)

Visual Reference

key word : cartoony, fun illustrations, collage-y

Option 1 Sketches

Representing LGBT through fun graphic elements which represents drag queens (as they play a big role in the LGBT community) and direct gender symbols

Mood Board 2

Sketches

After receiving feedback, my lecturer said to not be so literal with the illustration.

Solution:

Minimal graphic elements, using small icons and illustration to incorporate elements which represents the LGBT community and also Indonesian batik.

Execution

the fonts were digitized using adb. Illustrator, using a mixture of basic shapes and pen tool. I used an existing san serif font as guidance on the basic structure of each font. You can see on the most right picture, I refined the 'g' from a more curved circular shape to a straighter one to be more consistent with the other fonts. I then also created a simple cloud vector to reference the batik 'mega mendung', reminding the topic we talk about is of Indonesia.

Mockups

Outcome Before Refinement

Outcome After Refinement

The main thing I fixed were the consistency between fonts and the letter 'o'. I was told to create a usual o and not as a illustrated flower.I then also implemented more of the mega mendung vector.

Book Design

This follow up assignment requires us to create a book relating on our topic and implementing our created fonts.

Pride Book Reference

Layout Reference

Since my book's concept is a profile book, I will be using many images of said icons, which is why I chose references which is mainly picture based. I chose to create something that's more carefree and loud just like the LGBT community. In addition, using any colors for obvious reasons.

Cover Design Reference

The main image of my book cover will be in black and white but with colorful collage-like accents to reflect the book contents. My book covers icons of Indonesia's LGBT community which dates back to decades ago which is why a few of the images are in black and white. I wanted to find a way to create a flow from black and white to colorful color scheme.

Cover making process - application: Adb Photoshop.

The main image of my cover is none other than Marsha P. Johnson, American gay liberation activist and self-identified drag queen. Known as an outspoken advocate for gay rights, Marsha has influenced the community globally. They were often seen with a beautiful flower crown, which is why I wanted to use that element as the colorful accent on the cover and back cover. I manually cropped out the flowers on photoshop then compiled it into a collage, branching from the flower headpiece she used in the image.
